Percy Lyulph (“Perf”)Wyndham was a Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards, and died at Soissons aged 26 on 14th September 1914. He was shot through the head by a sniper whilst leading his men out of a wood. He went into the regular army after Eton, so he was sent to the front right at the beginning of the war. He was from an aristocratic family, the only child of George Wyndham, MP for Dover, and Secretary of State for Ireland, who had died in 1913, and his wife Sibell, Countess Grosvenor. Sibell was rather a formidable character, twice married and widowed just before the war.
The family estate was Clouds, at East Knoyle in Wiltshire, and Percy had moved there after his marriage to Hon. Diana Lister (daughter of Lord Ribblesdale and sister of Hon. Charles Lister) in 1913.
