Ernest Rawson was the eighth of 14 children born to Thomas and May Elizabeth Rawson of Flintham. The family home was rented from TBT Hildyard of Flintham Hall, and still stands as one of the “Highbanks” cottages on Main Street. By 1911 the 18 year old Ernest was living with Mr John James Laughton and his family in the neighbouring village of Elston, working as a miller’s carter. He joined the 2nd Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters as a private before the outbreak of war, and was killed in action on 20 September 1914. He was awarded the Clasp, Victory and British Medals.
