John Whittaker was the first of ten children born to Herbert and Fanny Whittaker.  They were a farming family, renting from Trinity College Cambridge one of three cottages grouped together and now know as ‘Cottage Farm’ on Main Street.  John was working as a labourer for his father when the war broke out.  He died in action in France on 22 July 1916.

Two younger brothers followed him to war: Thorpe Whittaker returned after serving as a Royal Field Artillery driver; Charles Whittaker was killed in action in 1918.
