Fred Shephard was the fifth of seven children born to William and Maria Shepherd.  The family lived in Manor Farm (now ‘The Manor House’) on Main Street and worked land belonging to TBT Hildyard of Flintham Hall. Fred was a private, initially with the Army Ordnance Corps then transferring to the Northumberland Fusiliers.  He was wounded in France in 1917 and died in action in Italy 27 October 1918.  He was awarded the Victory and British medals.

Fred’s younger brother by 8 years, Alfred Leonard Shephard, served with the Royal Navy from December 1916 until he was demobbed in February 1919.  He served on HMS Royal Sovereign and HMS Surly and was awarded the Victory and British medals.
