Richard was the son of James Wright Anderson and Eliza Emma Anderson (nee Cremer) and born in Stoke Bardolph, Notts in 1894. He was one of at least 11 siblings. His father was an agricultural labourer and had moved around with his job in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and finally Nottinghamshire, where he was living post 1911 Census. The Andersons lived in a cottage (since demolished) at the rear of Willow Cottage, Main Street, Flintham. James Wright Anderson died in 1940 and his wife Eliza Emma died in 1946; both are buried in Flintham Parish Cemetery.
One of Richard’s brothers, Herbert Alexander, married Doris Annie Whittaker at St Augustine's, Flintham on 17 December 1927. Two of her brothers, John and Charles, both died in the war.
Because Richard’s name does not appear on Flintham’s war memorial, we believe his family had moved away from the village by the end of the war.
