J G Bean was a member of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club of the English Lake District.
The Club felt that a memorial should be erected for those of its members who gave their lives during World War One. In 1923, the FRCC bought the summit of Great Gable and eleven other peaks around Wasdale Head and in October of that year handed the title deeds of 3000 acres of high mountain land over to the National Trust to hold in perpetuity, thus ensuring free access to the hills for all.
On 8 June, 1924, a plaque was unveiled on the summit of Great Gable listing the names of the twenty club members who had lost their lives during the war. Every year, on Remembrance Sunday, a gathering is held at the summit and a short address is given by the FRCC President before the two minutes silence is observed - all are welcome.
