Walter was killed during a surprise attack launched against the 55th Division, just to the south of Cambrai, on 30/11/1917. His body was never recovered/identified and so his name has been inscribed on the Cambrai Memorial. He is also memorialised at St Andrew's Primary School, Maghull, Lancashire, alongside other former pupils who fell during the Great War. Walter was the younger brother of my maternal grandfather, Cpl Fred Henretty who served with the Royal Engineers. By coincidence my paternal grandfather, Jim, was serving with the adjoining battalion (to the right) being the 1/10 (Scottish) Liverpool Kings Regiment. He survived the 30th November but most of his company (Y Coy) were killed ,wounded or captured.
