He had two service numbers, firstly he enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery 44304 12. Oct 1914, On 5 Jun 1915 he transferred to Royal Welsh Fusiliers 31161. A father of 4 children and a miner, he still felt it his duty to go to war, paying the ultimate price at the end of July 1917 when he died showing heroic bravery for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. I have visited his grave on eight occasions, never ceasing to marvel at the respect paid by persons of all nationalities and ages.
