Walter Goodson was a Serjeant in the 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He was killed at the Battle of Neuve Chappelle on 11th March 1915, the first soldier from the village of Sproxton, Leicestershire to make the ultimate sacrifice. I used to read the names of the men killed in WW1 on the memorial plaques in the church and chapel and wonder who they were. Walter's name was at the top of the rolls of honour. I visited Le Tourette cemetery and memorial in the Pas de Calais in 2010 and to see Walter's name on the memorial was an extremely moving experience for me.
