Alf was born in Coleraine, Victoria and was the son of George (decd) and Alice Richardson (later Granny Swift) and had 8 brothers and one sister. He was working as a miner when he enlisted in the 14th Infantry Bn AIF in October 1914. The 14th Bn landed at Anzac cove late on the afternoon and evening of 25th/26th April, 1915. During the battle for Hill 60 on the 21st August, Alf received severe abdominal wounds and died later that day.
