I found Edward George Rogerson while researching our family tree. He was born on 12 October 1893, the son of my great, great uncle Edward George Augustus Rogerson and his wife Agatha Agnes Eliza (nee Carter). One of eleven children, Edward had five brothers and five sisters. He was baptised on 4 February 1894 at Bengeo, Hertfordshire. As a boy he lived for a time (and was recorded in the 1901 census) with his aunt Alice Sherman, along with his sister Kate and brother Robert. Later he returned to live with his parents and is recorded aged 17 in 1911, living at 31 Warren Street, Bengeo and working as a Coachman (Groom). At that time he appears to have been known as George. The family then moved to 75 Cromwell Road, Hertford. At the age of 21 he enlisted in the army at Haddington on 3 April 1915 as a Private in the Lothian & Border Horse 1st/9th Bn, Royal Scots. He was killed in action on 7 October 1917, five days before his 24th birthday, at the Pas-de-Calais, and buried in Wancourt British Cemetery.
