Hugh, who was popularly known as Hughie, was born and raised in Dolgellau, Merionethshire. His parents, Mr and Mrs Hugh Davies, lived in Ivy Cottage in the town.
Hughie enlisted in the 10th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1915. Up to that time he had been working in the Angel Hotel in the town.
Nothing seems to be recorded of his death on 11 May 1917.
In June 1917 an unknown friend wrote a poem in his memory. That poem was published in Y Dydd, Dolgellau's local newspaper. Space allows for one verse only:
"Un o ffyddlon filwyr Rhyddid

Ydoedd Hughie hyd ei fedd,

Ga'dd ie ollwng o'i filwriaeth

I ardaloedd llawn o hedd;

Wedi bod yn gwisgo'r arfau

Gan filwrio ar y llawr,

Fe orchfygodd bob rhyw elyn,

Do, yn nerth ei Gadben mawr"
Hughie has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial to the Missing. He is also commemorated on St Mary's Parish Church Memorial and also on the War Memorial in Dolgellau.
We will remember him.
