Lewis was a Drummer with the 10th Battalion, The Welsh Regiment, (Rhondda Battalion).
Little seems to be recorded of his life or how he died. He was born in Towyn, Merionethshire and lived in 6 Wnion Square in Dolgellau with his wife Kate Jenkins and their three children. The youngest child was just five weeks old when Lewis was killed.
Records show that his parents were Mr Evan and Mrs Sarah Jenkins, who lived in 12 St David's Street, Llanelli. There is no known information to establish the link between his place of birth, Dolgellau or the address of his parents.
He enlisted in Pentre, Glamorgan and died in Mametz on 12 July 1916, aged 27.
On the first anniversary of Lewis's death Kate published a short In Memoriam item in Y Dydd, Dolgellau's local newspaper. It said:
"For Isaac Lewis Jenkins, 6 Wnion Square, Dolgellau, who fell in the Battle in France, July 12th 1916 - His wife and three children.
Kate Jenkins".
Kate's maiden name was Kate Griffith who had previously lived with her parents in Talyrafon Buildings in Dolgellau. It is likely that her brother was the William John Griffith of that address who was killed in action at Ypres in 1917.
Lewis has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing and on the War Memorial in Dolgellau.
We will remember him.
