George Aplleyard was one of twin brothers born in West Kensington in 1893. His mother. Kathleen came from Chipping Norton, and after divorcing her husband returned to live at Hill Lawn in the town. George had worked at the National Provincial Bank before the war. He arrived in France with the 20th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry on 5th May 1915. He was killed in action on 25th June 1916 whilst in the trenches at Armentieres, aged 23.
