Leonard John Vernon Black enlisted with the East Surrey Regiment, service number 7063, a territorial force. For the last week of his life he was with 1/7th Battalion London Regiment, service number 353390. Records show Leonard departing from L'Abbaye d'Eaucourt, the old British Line, at 1.45pm on the 7th October 1916, never to be seen again.. We believe he went missing in action around the Butte de Warlencourt and his body may be one among many laid to rest in the Warlencourt British Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
