My late Father - Claude E W Wallis BEM - lost 2 uncles in the First World War: Private William Charles Parsons (27) and his younger brother Sergeant Stanley James Parsons (19).
As with many of the service men and women of my Dad's generation and before, not much was said about what they did: they just quietly got on with their lives, keeping their inner thoughts (and nightmares) to themselves.
Whilst I'll probably never know what my Great Uncles did, or how they died, they will not be forgotten in our family: I am the proud and humble owner of their Memorial Plaques (see pictures). And, thanks to the comprehensive online records administered by the Common Wealth War Graves Commission, I know that their final resting places are less than 20 miles apart: William is in Belgium and Stanley in France.
Rest in Peace Great Uncle William and Great Uncle Stanley.
