On 24 October John was in a working party detailed to proceed down the Menin Road to the British front line to make some repairs. It appears that they missed the British line and continued on towards the German line. A warning was shouted and according to the War Diary “they appeared to hear but continued towards the German line. On seeing them the Germans opened fire with machine guns and threw bombs. The party scattered but the Germans came out and took all of the party except one wounded man prisoner. Our garrison opened fire with Vickers guns, Lewis guns and rifles causing some casualties amongst the enemy. Killed 7, wounded 11”.
