William Gordon Morrissey was my great uncle, killed in action during a counter barrage by German forces. After the allied troops adavnced, a counter barrage took place, the Germans having pin point accuracy. After seeing two of his 'cobbers' cut down (Bayliff and Chandler), William sprinted from cover to try and assist his fallen comrades and attend to the terrfied horses (who pulled the field guns) - but found he could do little for his two friends. He was joined by another of his mates (Dutton) and as they were making their way back through the intense shell fire, a shell fell close, killing him and Dutton instantly. They are buried at Vaire Sous Corbie, not far from where they fell in August of 1918. Lest We Forget.
