My great granddad's brother, William Edward Chapman (1892-1916). The notes from my family tree: CHAPMAN, L/Cpl. William Edward, 27255 1/11th East Lancashire Regiment (Accrington Pals), (formerly 883 10th Bn., East Yorks. Regt. and 10075 Army Cycl. Corps); b. South Newington, Hull; k.i.a. 1st July 1916; comm. Thiepval Memorial. [2, 4, 111] 10th (Service) Battalion (1st Hull) aka Hull Commercials Formed in Hull on 29 August 1914 by Lord Nunburnholme and the East Riding TF Association. Commonly known as the Hull Commercials Battalion. June 1915 : attached to 92nd Brigade, 31st Division. 15 December 1915 : moved to Egypt. Went on to France in March 1916. Transferred to 11th Bn East Lancashire Regiment (Accrington Pals) in April or May 1916. Killed in action 0730, 1st July 1916, in the attack on Serre. He was seen to fall as he was leaving the front line trench.
