I am investigating the names on the WW1 Memorial in Holy Trinity Church, Knaphill, Woking Surrey.

(Robert) Frederick Godfrey was born in 1876 in Knaphill and was christened on the 30 April 1876 at St John's Church, St John's, Woking.  His parents were George and Elizabeth Godfrey.  Frederick's grandfather, Henry Godfrey, married Elizabeth Waterer on 17 August 1809 at St Olave's Church, Southwark.  The Waterer family were an old Woking family and owners of a large and successful Horticultural Nursery in Knaphill/Horsell.  Frederick's uncle, Robert Godfrey, was co-owner of the Nursery with Anthony Waterer.  Not surprisingly, Frederick's occupation on the 1891 and 1901 Census Returns is 'Gardener'.

Frederick married Ethel Green on the 11 June 1902 at St Mark's Church, Noel, Park, Wood Green, London.  At the 1911 Census Frederick was a Filter Bed Labourer at the Water Works.  His parents were still living in Knaphill when Frederick died on the 28 February 1918.  He was 42 years old.
