I was thrilled to find my Grandfather here. We (my brother and I) never knew him, of course, except that he died in the Great War. But we know a little about the effect that it had on the family. We never knew our Grandmother either. We understand that she remarried but her and her new husband died in the flu epidemic of 1929. These deaths saw my mother and her brothers and sisters being sent to orphanages. My mother was never able to talk about these events and what they meant to her but, it is easy to see that they did have an effect. We understand that she never knew her father; although we now know that he died after she was born. Sadly he died just before the end of the war. Without knowing the full story he must have been looking forward to coming home to see his new baby daughter. The family lived with Grandparents who were strict but I can imagine that in my mother's early days were happy in a big family. But it was so soon to end. This shows the sadness in the death of a parent, twice over for her. But, here we remember that my grandfather gave his life so that we could live our life the way we do. At the going down of the sun, we remember them, we remember them.
