Robert Hamilton Lockhart was born on the 3rd February 1892 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, the son of John Lockhart. He was educated at Bellahouston Academy where he was the Steven Gold Medallist in 1909.

In 1910 he enrolled at the University of Glasgow aged 18. During his four years at Glasgow, Lockhart studied a range of subjects. These included Mathematics, Logic, English, French, German, Latin and Constitutional Law. He was a bright student, winning a prize in Constitutional Law and receiving a “Certificate of Distinction” for his performance in an Unprepared Latin Translation. He graduated in 1913 with a Master of the Arts degree.

Following his studies he worked as a law clerk with Messrs Wright, Johnston & Mackenzie of Vincent Street in Glasgow. He also played golf at the Ralston Golf Club.

When war broke out, Lockhart enlisted as a Private in the 9th Bn. Highland Light Infantry. On 25th January 1915 he was gazetted to the 9th Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers as a 2nd Lieutenant and attached to the 7th Bn. Sadly, 2nd Lieutenant Robert Hamilton Lockhart fell on the 11th of November 1915 in France, aged 23.
