He attended University College School, in Hampstead and he is commemorated on the School's War Memorial which was designed by Edgar Lutyens. The son of proud Scots, Surgeon General William Gerard Don, M.D. and Jean Ann Don, nee Fairweather. He worked as a Bank Clerk prior to the First World War (1911 Census) and joined the Sherwood Forresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), he was attached to the 2nd Bn South Wales Borderers in March 1916 and was killed at the assault at Beaumont Hamel on 1st July 1916. UCS, Hampstead records that he led his men over the top, where they were met by murderous fire, 2nd Lt Don was hit and was carried to the parapet by his servant where he died.
