Laurence Gataenby was born in Epping Forest, Tasmania on the 10th April 1889. He attended the Launcesteon church Grammar school and went on to be a farmer.
He played first class cricket for Tasmania twice in 1914. He also represented the North Tasmania Cricket Association, playing aginst the South of the state 4 times, and holds the record score of 367 runs.
He enlisted early, as his service number shows (72), into the 40th Battalion A.I.F. However it wasn't until November 1916 that he went to the front.. He died from wounds, received in action, to his right shoulder, neck, face and loin.
