Private Albert Walter Scott born 21st March 1897 in Nottingham. Brother to Harold, my Grandad. They we're both conscripted into the Sherwood Foresters, Notts and Derby Regiment. Harold came home, but sadly Albert died in France on 14th January 1917. The telegram sent to the family said he had been wounded, but a letter on 24th January 1917 by Captain Robert Webb explained that Albert was his runner and had gone out with three others and were caught by a mortar, he was found to be missing when they returned and they went out to search for him when it was safe. Albert was eventually found after crawling into a large iron tank as the enemy were all around. He states he did not appear badly wounded but they warmed him up and took him to the dressing station. Sadly Albert died the following morning, the Captain said he felt it was as much shock and exposure as his wounds. Captain Webb finishes his letter with, 'Scott, young hero, whose life has not been laid down for nothing, our time will come.' He received the death medal and was buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, France. We are very proud of Albert, my Grandad Harold and all the heroes of WWI.
