I never met or knew Eveline or her family as far as I'm aware. She was 49 when she died, or rather when she gave her life for her country, a few years older than I am now. I cannot imagine the horrors she was subjected to as a nurse. I don't know what motivated her to join up, or whether she knew she was travelling to her death. I don't know how many soldiers she helped recover or tried in vain to save. I know she had a sister in Bromley and I cannot imagine the sense of loss she would have felt when she was informed about Eveline's death. I've been to the military cemetery in Etaples and may have walked past her resting place and never really looked. If it wasn't for this project, I would never have known about her, who she was and what she did for her country, and I feel privileged that I do now.
