Along with many others eager to do their duty, Edward enlisted in the army in April 1915. Three months later his regiment left Devonport on board HMT Ulysses bound for the Gallipoli Peninsula. They joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and arrived in the Dardanelles on 4th August 1915. Early on the morning of the 9th August the regiment were landed on the beach in Sulva Bay, where they quickly came under shell and rifle fire. Edward lost his life that day aged 19 years. He has no known grave but his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial and on the village War Memorial outside St Nicholas Church, Pyrford, Surrey
