John Jones was my grandfather's uncle. He emigrated to Canada from Stalybridge in Cheshire and he joined up from there in 1915. His wife and two children returned to the UK and his name appears on the Stalybridge war memorial in the town. He was involved in the battle around the St Eloi craters in the Spring on 1916, and is was here he met his death. He came from a very close-knit family, and the photograph was originally sent to his brother (my great-grandfather) as a postcard. The newspaper clipping is of John's brother Mark, who served in the Cheshire regiment and survived the war. My mum went to school with John's grandson.
