Charles Langford was my father-in-law's brother, born in Lambeth, South London. At the outbreak of WW1 he was serving as a gunner with the Royal Artillery. He was 21 years old. In August his regiment embarked from Folkestone for France. His mother arrived too late to see him leave. The first battle of the Aisne began on 12th September 1914, and a letter was received to say that he was killed in action 9 days later. Some years ago my late husband and I visited the cemetery at Vailly to find his grave. I have his Small Book, posthumous medals and the letter telling of his death.
