Born in Ripley, Derbyshire on 7th April 1895 to Frank and Alice. In 1911 he was living with his aunt and uncle in Leabrooks Derbyshire and working down the pit. He enlisted on 8th September 1914 in Derbyshire aged 19 years 130 days. The Derbyshire Courier printed an obituary on 4th December 1915 stating that Mr and Mrs Cater with whom Thomas had been residing for the previous four years had received a letter from Private Hinchcliffe stating that he 'was writing to inform you that Tom had been killed instantaneously by a German sniper. He did not suffer any pain.It was a great blow to me for a while, because I had been with him and knew him to be a great friend. I have lost a good pal.' The paper also stated that he had been working a Moreweed New Pit before enlistment.
