Private Harry CROPPER

(41044), North Staffs 8th (B Coy)

Died 4th Nov. 1918, aged 20

Harry was born on 7th September 1898 in Manchester, one of 10 children (9 survived childhood) of Thomas and Euphemia Cropper. His father worked as an Iron driller.

In 1911 he was living with parents and 7 siblings and was still at school.

He enlisted on 14th February 1917 into the Manchester regiment. In January 1918 he transferred to North Staffordshire Regiment from 4th Kings Liverpool regiment.

Harry was affected by gas poisoning in May 1918 and sent to Fulham Hospital and then home for a few weeks.

He was killed in action only 1 week before the armistice and was laid to rest along with 23 other soldiers, (including my grand-uncle), in a peaceful little churchyard in the small French town of Wargnies Le Grand.

There will be a small ceremony there at 11am on 4th November 2018, each soldier will be remembered with a poppy cross.
