Godfrey Johnson was a pupil at Southend High School for Boys who worked as a Bank clerk before enlisting. He most likely arrived at the front and fought in the Battle of the Somme before and survived. He most likely received his fatal wound at the Battle of Arras whilst serving with the London rifle regiment where the aim was to relieve pressure from a french offensive. He is remembered by all at his old school. His name is also written on the Roll of Honour in Priory Park, the County Borough Memorial on southend cliff top and the memorial of ST Alban the Martyr in Southend and the Southend for Boys war memorial.
