Charles William Frederick Chant was my second-cousin twice removed. He was born on 28th February 1898 in Barnes, Surrey, the only son of Charles and Caroline Chant. He was killed at Ypres on 31st July 1917, aged just nineteen. He had an older sister, Ellen, who drowned in the River Thames in 1936, aged forty-four. Charles and Ellen's father, Charles senior, died in 1931 but their mother, Caroline, lived until 1945 having lost both of her children in tragic circumstances.
