Board, William Charles
He was born during the first half of 1894, in Devonport (Dev.), and died 20 May 1917, in Arras (Fr.). He was only twenty three years old, and left no family of his own behind.
As well as receiving the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service, he was also awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his bravery.
His father was Herbert George Board, b. early 1856, Kensington (Lon.); d. May 1898, Wandsworth (Sur.)
His mother was Jessie Smith, b. 19 Jul 1866, Bothwell (Scot.); d. 1950.
They married 21 Dec 1888, in Canterbury (Kent). It seems they only had one child.
Herbert had previously been married to Elizabeth Brown, 12 May 1883, in York (Yks.). Herbert was also in the military. It appears this couple had no children.
William's paternal grandparents were:
Board, George Silvester b. 1825, Pawlett (Som.); d. mid 1888, Hendon (Lon.)
Dickinson, Clarissa Catherine b. 1830, London (Lon.); d. ?
William's maternal grandparents were:
Smith, William b. 11 Nov 1830, Lamlash (Scot.); d. after 1901, Lanarkshire (Scot.)
Muir, Agnes White b. 22 Jan 1836, Bothwell (Scot.); d. 20 Mar 1913, Glasgow (Scot.).
They married 21 Sep 1860, in Greenock (Scot.), and had five children.
Although the bastardy case was eventually dismissed, it appears that William's father Herbert may have had another son, to a woman named Hannah Humphries from Ramsbury (Wilt.). The boy was named Herbert George Board Humphries, and was born 2 Jun 1874, Ramsbury (Wilt.).
