O P Sergt C A Jackson of the 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment writing to Councillor R J Squires, refers to the death of L/Cpl Mayle as follows.  I am deeply grieved for his wife and family and I know that in losing him Mr Thompson has lost a very trustworthy and conscientious assistance.  I was not sure whether he was a regular assistant at your Bible Class, but if not the members will know him well.  It is a fine death to die, doing ones duty for home, King and Country, and that is a great consolation.  I have often wondered, whether if the people in general at home, more especially the younger people, realise that our brave lads are doing our here in this terrible struggle.  For in my opinion those poor fellows that are killed and wounded doing their duty are dying and suffering for those at home.  There is great sympathy for Mrs Mayle and her young family and I hope those who can will do whatever they can to help them in their great loss. I feel Joey’s death very keenly myself and I hope and pray God will see fit to bring this terrible war to an early end, although I fear there will be terrible loss of life.
