He writes: I am grieved to have to inform you of the death of your son Leslie. He was shot through the head while doing his duty in firing at the enemy. I hope it will be a comfort to you to know that he suffered no pain, death came instantaneously. We buried him the same night on a little hill behind the lines. Then kneeling together in a little trench, they listened while I read the most beautiful parts of the Burial Service. I hope that in so doing I met your wishes. After the service we covered the grave shaping the earth into a mound, and at one end a simple cross was placed made by one of this own men, it bears your son’s name and the date of his death. I myself had not been with him long, but I learn he was a keen soldier and a willing worker, and had endeared himself both to his section and platoon. Later I feel sure it will be your son’s consolation that he gave his life cheerfully for his country. In the meantime accept my deepest sympathy.
