James Winter was the elder brother of Meggie and Alice Winter, Meggie was my Granny. I have recently discovered that James was injured at the Battle of Loos (25th September-18th October 1915) and was brought home to a military hospital in London where he died on 6th January 1916 . I think he as the first from his village , North Seaton Colliery in Northumberland, to die and the whole village turned out to walk behind the hearse. When my Great Grandparents turned round at the end of the road the procession behind them stretched for about a mile. James does not have a military headstone as my Great Grandmother did not want one.
